Scammon Elementary is a Level 1+ Neighborhood school that promotes Student success through rigorous curriculum, elevated expectations, and accountability.
Scammon Philosophy At Scammon our philosophy is to educate the whole child. We want our students to graduate with a real world readiness that prepares them for the academic challenges of tomorrow, as well as gaining the necessary skills to be kind and compassionate to others. We do this by creating a harmonious environment that empowers students to be upstanders. We are proud of our huskies! Academics English Language Arts The reading curriculum at Scammon encourages our students to develop a passion for reading while challenging students to become confident critical thinkers. Our interdisciplinary thematic units of instruction allow students to immerse themselves in rich texts while seeking answers to essential questions which help guide their learning throughout the EngageNY curriculum. Using the Common Core State Standards as an educational framework for Reading and Language Arts, Scammon follows a sequential form of study through each grade level, with a focus on balanced literacy. Anchor texts have been selected by teachers in each grade which include both classical works of fiction as well as popular Young Adult (YA) novels for teens. A great deal of reading instruction requires our students at Scammon to collaborate with their peers while engaging in close reading strategies to help analyze and evaluate complex texts. Adaptive writing tasks which align to modular learning objectives help students build a continued capacity to write with a clear conviction and purpose. Scammon has continued to implement a blended learning environment model where technology programs are used to build and expand reading comprehension. Computer application programs such as Achieve 3000, Newsela, CommonLit and Readworks are used to help support differentiated reading instruction with a variety of texts. Blending computer-based programs with traditional place-based learning helps provide our students with a toolkit of strategies to become critical thinkers and problem solvers while creating measures of accountability. The ultimate goal is to produce life-long readers who can be successful in future endeavors long after they have left the Scammon community. Mathematics For our students to be successful in today’s world, they need a strong foundation in mathematics. At Scammon Elementary we are successfully using differentiated instruction incorporated with the enVision math curriculum. Additionally, to support all learners we supplement with different computer programs such as “Imagine Math” and “KhanAcademy” to target student deficiency and accelerated concepts. All lessons align with the Common Core State Standards and students are making sense of important mathematical ideas. Here at Scammon we also offer the High School Algebra Initiative class with 90+% passing rate. This course is offered four days a week after school and with a passing grade students receive high school credit. Additionally, we are proud to have a Math Team, which competes in Chicago Junior Math Leagues. The Math Team is a fun and competitive group. It is a great place for students to develop intuitive thinking skills and learn new types of math. Students not only learn new material, but apply previous math knowledge to fun and challenging problems. Furthermore, they learn to view math not as a set of rules and guidelines, but as an art. Students have competed for the last two years and performed extremely well against other Chicago Public Schools. This school year the Math Team tied for first place in the city-wide competition, as well as four of our students placed in the top five.
